Although the IPP sentence was abolished in 2012, thousands remain trapped by indefinite punishment.
As of December 2025:
924 unreleased IPP prisoners remain in custody
1464 recalled IPP prisoners are back in prison
2388 total IPP prisoners remain imprisoned
75% of unreleased IPPs held beyond tariff have served 10 extra years
1376 people remain on IPP licence in the community
